CANNES: ‘The Homesman’ Acquired by Newly Launched Saban Films

stijbob:

Here it is again that film with all the actors in that Cannes Film Festival are all talking about.

Originally posted on Variety:

Tommy Lee Jones’ Western “The Homesman,” which premiered at Cannes on Sunday night, has sold its North American distribution rights to the new film venture Saban Films.

Media mogul and billionaire Haim Saban launched the distribution company on May 6, and “The Homesman” is its first acquisition. Several U.S. studios had expressed interest in “The Homesman” based on pre-Cannes screenings.

The drama, directed by and starring Jones, is adapted from the Glendon Swarthout novel, and tells the story of a claim jumper on a journey with a group of women. It co-stars Hilary Swank, Meryl Streep and Hailee Steinfeld.

“The Homesman” was produced by Peter Brant, who covered roughly 65 percent of the film’s budget (which was less than $20 million), Brian Kennedy and Luc Besson.

International rights were sold to EuropaCorp.

“I am delighted that Saban Films has chosen ‘The Homesman’ to begin their venture into film release,” said…

EuromaidanThugsThe Yatsenyuk regime’s anti-terrorism operations in the southern and eastern oblasts (regions) of Ukraine are really a use of martial force against Ukrainian civilians opposed to the coup-installed regime in Kiev. Predominately peaceful Ukrainian citizens opposing the coup leaders and not “armed separatists”  have been the main target of the regime’s militias.

The discourse about “pro-Russian” separatists is a misleading attempt to hide the real nature of the protests against the regime, which is opposition to a coup. The main issue is one of anti-coup protesters versus a junta and not separatists and federalists versus Kiev. To refer to the junta in Kiev as the government of Ukraine is to reject or ignore its illegality.

Try making Justin Gellatly’s doughnuts – you won’t be able to eat them without licking your lips.

I’ve barely left Bread Ahead –the bakery in Borough Market, south London, opened by Justin Gellatly and Matt Jones – when the aroma leaking from the cake box I’m carrying becomes too much to resist. It’s sugar and vanilla combined with buttery, yeasty dough and could only be Gellatly’s delicious doughnuts.

Perfected during his time at St John in east London – and so fabulous, they’re on the cover of his new book, Bread, Cake, Doughnut, Pudding (Fig Tree, £25) – they’re pillowy and heavy in the hand, with pale yellow waistbands straining with vanilla custard.

I bite in and a dollop of custard hits the ground with a slap. Bread Ahead’s signature ’nuts lead an increasingly crowded field, with some London hot spots leading the way.

The great under-appreciated miracle of the iPhone — couldn’t make a reliable phone call for approximately 3 years, yet it was a glorious success anyway!

Question: To what extent was that the origin of the current phenomenon of users abandoning voice calls in favor of texting + social networks? The ultimate rope-a-dope marketing strategy. “Aha, you thought you were buying a phone? Guess again!!”

Could that rope-a-dope marketing strategy work in other fields? Video games? Cars? Banking? Health insurance?

2014 Cannes Film Festival Heats Up

Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly, The Artist and The Piano are sure to do well at the film festival in Cannes this year. South of France is really nice this time of year. I like croissants and other patisserie.

Actor Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, a biopic of Grace Kelly starring Nicole Kidman, and a Western directed by Tommy Lee Jones are among the buzzy films that will unspool starting this week at the annual Cannes Film Festival. Now in its 67th year, this year’s festival is packed, as usual, with a bevy of highly-anticipated films. “Grace of Monaco,” starring Ms. Kidman as the legendary actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly, kicks off the festival Wednesday amid some criticism from Princess Grace’s children about the nature of her film.
